New to K-beauty? The ten-step routines, the toners that aren't really toners and the shelves of serums can feel like a lot. The good news: you don't need all of it. At Glasswell, the same beginner questions come up again and again, so we answered the most common ones here, with the gentle, layered approach we build every routine around. It works for every skin type and every skin tone.
1. "Do I really need 10 steps?"
No. The famous 10-step routine is more of a menu than a rulebook. A great K-beauty routine can be as simple as cleanse, hydrate, moisturize and protect. Start there, see how your skin feels for a few weeks, and only add a step when you have a clear reason for it, like extra hydration or a serum for a specific goal.
A simple starter routine:
- Morning: gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, moisturizer, SPF 30+.
- Night: cleansing oil (if you wore sunscreen or makeup), gentle cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer.

2. "What is double cleansing, and do I need it?"
Double cleansing means washing your face twice at night: first with an oil-based cleanser to melt away sunscreen, makeup and excess oil, then with a gentle water-based cleanser to wash away what's left. Oil dissolves oil, so the first step lifts long-wear sunscreen and makeup that a foam alone can leave behind.
You don't need it every single night. If you wore sunscreen or makeup, double cleanse. If you stayed in all day, one gentle cleanse is plenty. And yes, cleansing oils work for oily skin too: they rinse off clean and don't leave a greasy film.
Try: SKIN1004 Light Cleansing Oil followed by COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser. (Our full guide to double cleansing.)
3. "What's the difference between a toner and an essence?"
In K-beauty, a toner is usually a thin, watery liquid that adds a first layer of hydration and preps skin for the steps that follow. It's not the stingy, alcohol-heavy toner you might remember. An essence is a little more concentrated, often slightly thicker, and is all about extra moisture and a bouncy, dewy look.
Which one do you need? If you're keeping things simple, pick one. A hydrating toner is the easiest place to start. If your skin still feels tight or looks dull after toner, add an essence on top.
Try: ROUND LAB 1025 Dokdo Toner for a gentle daily toner, or COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for extra hydration.
4. "What order do I put everything on?"
The easy rule: thinnest to thickest. Watery textures go on first so they can sink in, and richer creams go on last to seal everything in.
- Cleanser (oil first, then water-based, at night).
- Toner, patted in with your hands.
- Essence (optional).
- Serum, on slightly damp skin.
- Eye cream (optional). (Do you need one?)
- Moisturizer.
- Sunscreen, every morning, as the very last step.
Give each layer a few seconds to absorb before the next one. No need to wait minutes between steps.
5. "Do I need sunscreen every day, even if it's cloudy?"
Yes. UV rays reach your skin on cloudy days and through windows, and daily sunscreen is the single best step for keeping skin looking smooth and even over time. It also protects the work every other step in your routine is doing. That goes for every skin tone, including deeper skin that rarely burns.
What helps: SPF 30 or higher every morning on your face, neck and ears, and reapply when you're outdoors for long stretches. If you've avoided sunscreen because of a white or gray cast, Korean sunscreens are worth a try. Many have light, serum-like textures that rub in clear.
Try: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Niacinamide or Anua Zero-Cast Moisturizing Finish Sunscreen. More on sunscreen for deeper skin in Skincare Worries for Melanin-Rich Skin, Answered.
6. "How long until I see results, and how do I try new products safely?"
Hydration is the quick win: skin often feels softer and looks more plump within days. Goals like a more even-looking tone or a smoother texture take longer, usually 4 to 12 weeks of consistent use. Consistency matters much more than how many products you own.
What helps:
- Add one new product at a time, and give it two weeks before adding the next. That way you'll know what's working.
- Patch test first: apply a little behind your ear or along your jaw for a few days.
- If something stings, burns or makes your skin red, stop using it. That's not a sign it's "working."
- Introduce stronger actives like retinol slowly. (Our guide to starting retinol.)
When to see a dermatologist
A good routine can do a lot for how your skin looks and feels, but some things need a professional. See a board-certified dermatologist if a concern is persistent, painful or getting worse, if breakouts are deep or leaving scars, or if you notice a spot or mole that changes in size, shape or color.
